Sugi: The Big Story Behind the Small Name

Cryptomeria

The Cedar Avenue of Nikko, Japan, is one of the most beautiful man-made landscapes. Over 200,000 cedar trees, sugi in Japanese, had been planted over 400 years ago, for the visitors of the temple to enjoy a cool shade on their long walk to the shrine.

The Latin name for sugi tree is cryptomeria. As the name goes much in line with the format of currencies supported on Sugi NFC wallet while evoking its mission’s keywords – security and tranquility – we saw a clear fit between the name and the product. Sugi card protects users’ crypto holding, giving them a peace of mind much the same way a cryptomeria shade provides shelter and calmness.

We are developing Sugi to protect cryptocurrency users and at the same time provide them with an intuitive everyday use pattern. This way, not only the card’s safety advantage is brought to focus, but there is also a big emphasis on “the how” of everyday use. The simple, intuitive, and familiar interface lets everyone, from every level of tech-savviness and understanding of blockchain, to actually use cryptocurrencies. The simple, intuitive, and familiar interface lets everyone, from every level of tech-savviness and understanding of blockchain, to actually use cryptocurrencies, without the need to change habits or carry around clunky devices and cables.

Sugi’s mission

The story of the Sugi card began in 2016 when Sofitto, the company developing the technology powering Sugi, was founded. Sofitto is the brainchild of Alexander Vasylchenko, the former CTO at Mycelium which launched a hardware Bitcoin wallet in 2013, now used by hundreds of thousands of users, and the result of a shared effort and expertise of Alexander’s team.

Sofitto’s mission is building infrastructure for the next-generation money ecosystem. It aims to merge blockchain technology into traditional banking products and conventional banking cards through the development of the Sofitto card — Sugi.

Security and usability

Sugi NFC wallet card is a user-friendly hardware cryptocurrency wallet with a strong focus on security. Alexander understood the importance of cold storage for the safety of crypto assets. But he also learned that usability of nearly all hardware crypto wallets was too complicated for ordinary people without extensive technical knowledge.

So he and Sofitto set out to make a product that anyone can use without compromising on the security of their assets.

The idea was planted

and Sugi was born. Sofitto has just launched the Sugi NFC Wallet Card and Sugi mobile app for cryptocurrency holders. The hardware wallet can be pre-ordered now for shipments dispatched in November 2018.

Finally. Secure crypto transactions made simple.
